I also agree that every piece of text does not need a response, but I do think students can find value in discussing or reflective writing about what they read. So many times I'll read something that really hits me, and I can't wait to discuss my thoughts with somebody. I also agree it's really important to establish a purpose for reading, and often times that reason is pure enjoyment. To assign a report or project can definitely lessen the fun of it. That's why I really like to invite students to participate in an authentic experience of reviewing or recommending a book. There are some great sites where students can share their thoughts about what they read. And if it's from a magazine, they can write a letter to the editor to express their opinion about the article. If we are wanting to motivate children to read is about sharing books, recommending books, pupils displaying a set of books in the classroom, story time, reading extracts from books to whet the appetite, having a variety of ways of responding to books which might include doing nothing. And now I need to go back and replace the word books with reading material because what about comics, newspapers, online? We are motivated of read if it has a purpose for us. Something I feel very strongly about.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
