I love this lesson idea and am excited to use it in my Language Arts classes.
I have a quick question: I'm not able to download the entire file. Specifically, I'd really like to have a copy of the cards you describd. ("After students are familiar with examples of TF, you can do a review by cutting the TF cards and distributing the cards with the bold names on the left and the examples of that feature on the right. Have students walk around the room to locate their matching partner.")

I did this in an Intesive Reading class for 11th and 12th graders, they loved it; the titles were interesting and kept them engaged. They didn't realize they were learning TF! Thanks

Hello, I would love to have a copy of this lesson. Great way for students to have a visual of just how much easier it is to read expository text due to text features.

Hello all you wonderful educators who requested access to note cards! I created a link to those, and you should find it embedded in the paragraph that talks about that. You can also click onto a file for ALMOST the entire unit, and the note cards are there as well. Between the individual links AND the file link, you should have access to all the resources.

I am new to teaching middle school (just started last month) and had no idea on how to begin teaching Determining Importance in nonfiction. I work with very resistant 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who are working below level in reading. I think this is a wonderful starting point. I believe it will keep them fully engaged, and I'm excited to see how it goes! Thank you so much for sharing!!

Hi, first of all allow me to say thats just reading this lesson has me wanting to call or email my teachers at 10:00 o'clock at night to tell them about it... lol However, I will wait for tomorrow. Also, maybe I am not looking at it correctly, but it seems the post-test answer sheet has the answers as does the post-test answer key. I would suspect that only the answer key should have the answers. I also noticed that the pre-test has an additional question that the post-test does not have.

I did it a bit differently (I have 8th grade) and I selected 10 of the key terms and cut them out. Then I handed the students with a paper of the definitions and had the students match the term to the definition and then think of an example. It was a great partner activity!
